Calvara E. Brooks is a two-time breast cancer survivor who has faced the devastating realities of this disease head-on. In December 2016, she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer—a shock that affected not only her but her entire family. After undergoing surgery, Mrs. Brooks made the decision to forgo chemotherapy and radiation, choosing instead a path of natural healing. She successfully overcame the illness, only to face a second diagnosis in February 2024.

Following her second surgery, Mrs. Brooks experienced not only the physical pain of recovery but also the emotional strain on her family. While navigating these challenges, she was also responsible for maintaining her household, leaving little room for the healing she desperately needed. During her first diagnosis, Mrs. Brooks had only been on her job for six months. She reached out to various organizations for financial support but only received a one-time donation of $250 from a foundation. Despite this, Mrs. Brooks promised herself, “If I beat this again, I’ll start my own nonprofit so other women won’t have to feel what I felt.”

It was with the support of her family that she was able to keep her household afloat until she could return to work. This experience ignited her commitment to changing the lives of other women, leading to the creation of the I C Brooks Breast Cancer Foundation.
